Where the World Has Traveled in 2012, According to Facebook

From the Data Team at Facebook comes this visualization of Facebook users’ travel so far this year. Data Scientist Justin Moore explains:

This map represents a year-to-date view of Facebook users checking into two distinct areas of the world. As a proxy for plane travel, certain restrictions were placed on the distance and time between the two locations. The result was more informative than simply illustrating airport check-ins and demonstrates interesting insights, such as common long-haul travel routes, with a clear concentration between Europe and North America.

How the ‘all-new’ Foursquare is using big data to figure out what you’ll crave next

On Facebook, you’re the sum of all your interactions and photos with others; but on Foursquare, location and detecting patterns are key. Foursquare today released a completely revamped mobile app for iOS and Android that takes years of data mining and algorithm refinement and stuffs it into a tiny blue-green app.

Facebook’s initial public offering has many people asking: “If I want to buy shares, how do I do it?”

We at CNNMoney wondered the same thing, so we decided to find out the direct way: by trying to buy a small handful of Facebook shares.

Interesting experiment from CNN Money – on the other side of things, here’s Dominic Rushe’s five reasons not to buy Facebook shares

imwithkanye: What are the best times to post to your favorite…

imwithkanye:

What are the best times to post to your favorite social media platforms? Bitly crunched the numbers and here’s what they found:

Twitter

  • Post 9am-3pm ET, Monday through Thursday
  • Especially post 1-3pm ET, Monday through Thursday
  • Avoid posting after 8pm ET during the weekends
  • Avoid posting after 3pm ET on Friday and at all on weekends

Facebook

  • Post 1-4pm ET during the week
  • Especially post midweek 1-3pm ET
  • The very best time is Wednesday at 3pm ET
  • Avoid posting between 8pm ET and 8am ET during the week
  • Avoid posting on weekends

Tumblr (graphic posted above)

  • Post from 4pm ET onward
  • Especially post from 7pm-10pm ET onward, with Monday and Tuesdays being good
  • Post on Friday evenings

(Sounds about right. Tumblr’s popularity in the evening supports my assessment that everyone likes to live-blog TV.)

“One billion dollars might seem like a high price to pay for a company with 13 employees and not much, if anything, in the way of revenues. But that’s what Facebook will pay to acquire Instagram, maker of a popular photo-sharing app for mobile phones. And though at first glance the deal might seem nutty, it may turn out to be a brilliant strategic maneuver—and a bargain to boot.”

Dan Lyons likes Facebook’s billion dollar bet on Instagram for one big reason: mobile.  (via cheatsheet)

Facebook And Dropbox Are Seriously Vulnerable To Hackers Right Now

Facebook And Dropbox Are Seriously Vulnerable To Hackers Right Now:

world-shaker:

A motivated hacker could copy a plain text file off of your mobile device that would grant him access to your entire account.

The problem exists within the app itself — the sensitive data isn’t encrypted, it simply sits on your device in plain, readable form.

There’s no jailbreak required to get this data either. Using a free piece of software called iExplore, which lets you browse your iPhone as if it were an external hard drive, Wright was able to gain access to the text file.

Looks like it affects the iOS and Android apps.
